Map of Home Contest Winner Collects From Dierks Bentley

Justin Bockbrader is one of two grand prize winners from Dierks Bentley's "Map of Home" contest, and he spent the day on the road with Dierks and crew in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan yesterday, collecting on his grand prize package!

The Map of Home contest was created to promote Dierks' new single, “Home.”  DB Congress members were encourged to "pin" their "home" on a giant map of the world, and tell their story of what home means to them, with words, pictures and videos.

Justin lives just outside of Bowling Green, Ohio in the country side of a very small historical town.  Dierks' Mt Pleasant, Michigan show on January 21 was the closest tour date near Pemberville.

"I just started this past summer to be a fan club member (now listed on the dbcongress.com rep page under Ohio!).  I never knew it existed. But I came to know of Dierks when I listened to some of his older stuff and loved it because he sings about heart break and at that time I felt like I was in every song because I've went through all of that," Justin told us.  "I respect and love how he writes the majority of his own music--now a days that's very rare."

Justin's winning entry is below.

I chose this picture because it is a true definition of home. This farm has been in our family for many generations. From the flag that hangs that was given to us at my uncles funeral, to the 1941 John Deere thats plowed many of fields and helped the family survive. My uncle lived on the farm right after WWII was over. He served for his country just like thousands of others did, and once he passed we could not give the farm away, so now we have family reunions and gatherings at the homestead. All 150 people come out year in and year out to see the old tractors and barns that stand tall for over two centuries. We still farm the land because thats what my uncle and our ancestors would want. I always stop out to see the flag drapped over the beams and think to myself I live in the greatest country in the world and nobody could ever take that from me. God Bless.

Dierks posted a series of tweets to introduce us to Justin:

"the first winner of our HOME map contest is here at our show in Michigan. about to go meet him. he is hanging out with us all day"

"say hi to justin bockbrader! or @bockbutt10. cool HOME story" (Justin tells us the nickname "bockbutt" was given to him by a buddy in the 6th grade and it has stuck every since...)

"he's a hockey player AND the number 7 is his number like me. liking this dude"

""I'm pretty sweet at #NHL Xbox".... wow, its on."

Justin told us that hockey was another huge influence on why he's a fan of Dierks.  "I've played since I was four and it's rare to see any artist lace them up (hockey skates) let alone a country superstar like Dierks
."

"1st preshow prayer and huddle with our HOME map contest winner . thx justin for hanging w us all day."

From Justin's Perspective"

My day with Dierks was one of the coolest experiences ever--the man is so down to earth and the nicest dudes I've ever met. Not only him but also all his band members and stage crew guys. Such good people involved with Dierks. We started out eating lunch and meeting all the members, then we went to the tour bus and played some video games but the NHL game was scratched (he knew I would of owned him).

Next I watched the sound check to all the songs he was doing that night. Later in the day my parents and I got to do the meet and greet and attend the show.

Justin watches Dierks and the guys at sound check

"Finally after the show we got to hang out on the tour bus with guys and tipped a few brews back. Dierks is a big fan of old classic country music like Hank, Johnny, Strait, and Waylon which I love about him. I always felt like he would be a good man to tip a few back and listen to country gold saturday nights with."

Dierks lived up to that sentiment by opening the show with a new song from the upcoming "Home" album, "Tip It On Back."  Justin and his dad got to do just that.

"Just an overall hell of a time," adds Justin. And one final Tweet:

@Bockbutt10: @DierksBentley Dierks man, really appreciate everything, was a badass time and experience, thanks for everything brother hope to see ya soon

Congratulations, Justin! Thanks for sharing your experience! And welcome to the DB Congress!

DB shows some love for Canada

Dierks Bentley performed on Friday night at the Queen City Ex. Bentley last came to Regina in 2009.
Dierks performs in Regina, Saskatchewan

Canadian Dierks fans were thrilled to have him back after his last show in Regina almost two and a half years ago (with Brad Paisley, 2/09).  It's obvious that Saskatchewan loves Dierks and he returns the feeling.

For those die-hard Bentley fans in attendance, and it appeared there were thousands in that category, the 15-song, 75-minute set certainly met their expectations.  It was obvious that Bentley was enjoying the evening and he wasn't shy about chatting up the audience.  A frequent visitor to Canada from the early days of his career, Bentley admitted he still gets nervous going through customs.
"Going through customs is always interesting...Even though I've been up here lots, I still get a little nervous...so when they asked me today, 'What are you doing up here?' I told them I was coming to play some country music and drink some cold beer."
Bentley also provided another reason he enjoys coming to Canada.
"It's nice to be in a part of the world where I can admit I'm a hockey fan and a hockey player and not have the people look at me like I've got three heads."

It appears that Dierks' ice-loving Canadian fans make him feel right at home when he travels north of the border, eh!

Dierks Performs at the NHL Awards and Poses with The Stanley Cup!

Dierks Bentley was the musical act for the 2011 NHL Awards Show tonight at The Palms Hotel in Las Vegas.  Dierks did a great job connecting with the crowd--"is there anybody out there...up there (pointing to the rafters)...down there (high fiving the fans at the stage)."

Prior to performing, Dierks spent a few minutes with NHL.com discussing Tim Thomas being his next door roommate in college, who they want to meet, Vegas, and being hockey fans. If they weren't watching hockey, they were playing Hockey XBOX while on the road touring.

Talking about being in Vegas....

DVR Alert: Dierks Bentley to Perform at 2011 NHL Awards

Dierks Bentley's love for music AND hockey is coming together in a big way.

Not only does Dierks play for the Iceholes (a men's recreational hockey league in Nashville, TN) on his days off, but his recent almost #10 Billboard hit, "Am I The Only One," was featured in NHL® Conference Finals national TV tune-in spots on NBC, VERSUS, CBC, RDS and NHL Network. This was a second version of the original video, this time with footage from the 2010-2011 NHL season and performances from Dierks' Jagermeister Country Tour.  The spot also ran online at NHL.com and team websites, in-arena during Playoff games and across the NHL's social media platforms.

And now Dierks is scheduled to perform, along with hip hop/electro pop group Far East Movement, at the 2011 NHL Awards™, to air Wednesday, June 22 at the Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas--a sold out event. Hosted by actor/comedian Jay Mohr, the NHL Awards will feature the best hockey players in the world alongside celebrities from music, stage and screen in celebration of the 2010-11 hockey season. The 2011 NHL Awards will be broadcast live at 7pm ET on VERSUS in the U.S. and CBC in Canada.

Dierks and Stanley - A Dream Come True

It is no secret the love Dierks Bentley has for hockey.  So when his Top 20 single, Am I The Only One, showed up as THE song for an NHL Stanley Cup Playoff TV spot, it was a dream come true for our proud president!

Dierks tweeted this caption and the link to the video earlier today:

"am I the only one" and the #NHLplayoffs combined!!?! too good to be true. http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=1083&id=114486

I was there the night Dierks played the Opry April 15, 2006 and was so proud to bring the Stanley cup on stage!

Dierks Plays Center; Guitar Boys Play Right Wing

Here's a great article from thefourthperiod.com where Dierks Bentley compares hockey to singing on stage.  Enjoy!

In the 13 years since the Predators arrived in Nashville, the team has slowly converted a pigskin town into a legion of loyal puckheads. One such fan is country superstar Dierks Bentley, a chart topping, award-winning artist who counts hockey amongst his great passions. Whenever he gets a chance, the Feel That Fire singer puts down his guitar, laces up, and hits the ice with his local men's hockey league, the Nashville IceHoles.

We caught up with the 35-year-old Arizona native, who compares his game to Nashville's Jordin Tootoo and explains how a concert for him is essentially like a hockey game.

How did your passion for hockey start?

Dierks Bentley: The Predators moved to town (in the late 90s) and I just remember going to a game and immediately falling in love with the sport. I played some rollerblade hockey before that, but being down in Tennessee it's hard to find some ice; all I could think about was playing hockey. A buddy of mine from Toronto gave me some gear and I went down and signed up for a men's league. I kind of had to see it live to get into it.

So the Preds coming to Nashville had a big effect on you becoming a hockey fan?

Yeah, it's had a huge effect on Nashville in general. When I first signed up for hockey, I signed up for a B league and I barely knew how to skate and hold a stick at the same time. Now, I'm still in that league and I'm a lot better than I was a few years back. The men's league has really developed because of the Predators.

How many Predators games do you get to attend or watch during the year?

It's tough because I'm on the road so much. I get off the road and I have a choice with my free time to either watch or play hockey, and I usually choose to play. I try to make six or seven Preds game a year. It's not as much as I'd like, but being married and having two kids makes it kind of tougher.

I hear you have your own term for The Fourth Period?

For us, it means going to a bar after the game and finishing the game at the bar – the fourth period. We've got some guys that are pretty good for the first three periods, but their strongest period is always the fourth period. They may not be able to pull their weight on the ice for three periods, but they do a fine job in the fourth! It's half the reason why they're on the team (laughs)!

Talk about the team and league you play in. I hear you have a clever team name?

Yeah, our team name is the Nashville IceHoles... great team! What I love about the IceHoles is we only have 10 guys; I can't stand being on a team with more than 10 players because every three shifts wouldn't be enough ice-time. I want to walk off the ice just completely drained.

In your 10 years of playing, what's the best game you've had?

I had a great game the other night. We were playing with seven guys against a much better team with 15. It came down to the third period and we were down 4-2, and I had the tying goal which was a deflection. In our league, to be able to plan that out and have it intentionally deflected and have it go in, that's more impressive than a slapshot or a wrist shot. I pulled that off and I angled my stick just right to get it over the goaltender's shoulder.

What position and style do you play?

I play center if I can because it's my favorite position, and also left wing because I'm right-handed and it's a lot easier for me to come down the left side and shoot. I play pretty aggressively – the more comfortable you are on skates, the more aggressive you can be. It's a non-check league, but there's a ton of checking going on. What I lack in talent, I make up for in hustle. When I come off the ice, I'm rocking back and forth like a heroin addict and everybody's like "Are you okay?" and I'm just like "Yeah, I can't breathe." It makes the beer in the fourth period taste that much sweeter!

So would you compare your game to anyone on the Preds? Maybe Jordin Tootoo?

(Laughs) I do love Toots. He's one of my good friends. What I love about Tootoo is that some around the league can't stand him, thinking he's out there just looking for hits and cheap shots. When I see Tootoo, I love the hustle that he plays with.

What does your family think about you playing?

They love it. I think they are more worried about me getting hurt, but I've gotten more injuries on stage than I've gotten on the ice. I've torn my ACL jumping off a stage riser, I've chipped my teeth on the microphone, got some stitches in my knee for sliding across the deck on a slippery night. Knock on wood I've never been hurt in hockey. I've taken some pucks to the shin and couple whacks with a stick, but nothing has ever broken.

Would you compare concerts for singers to hockey games for players?

For me, it is a hockey game. When I go out on stage, I tape my boots just like I'd lace my skates up – I tape 'em up with duct tape really tight. There are six of us in my band on stage just like there are six of us on the ice. I really approach it with the same energy. You get on stage and have that adrenaline rush. On stage, I'm the center and bring my bass players up on my left (wing), my guitar boys up on my right (wing)... and the drummer's the goalie, making sure nothing gets past us!
How did your music career get started?

I moved to Nashville when I was 19 and spent a long time playing in bars and clubs all over Nashville and downtown. Eventually I got a publishing deal and that led to a record deal. It took me about eight years to get things going.

Have you ever been approached by the Predators to do the goal song?

(Laughs) They have a great song right now, they've got Tim McGraw's I Like It, I Love It. It's a great tune, but it's time for a new tune. I've got to find the right song for them because I'd love to have that song up there.

If you weren't singing country music, what would you be doing?

It's too late to be a hockey player, but I don't know what else I'd be doing. I love hockey and grew up around go-carts so I love racing, too. I just feel blessed to be able to do this and not worry about a plan b. Until that time comes, I'll keep (singing).

Dierks Hits The Ice Before Bloomington Show

He’s known for his country music hits, but before tonight’s concert Dierks Bentley released some steam on the ice. Bentley is playing at U.S. Cellular Coliseum as part of the Jagermeister tour. B104 contacted Bentley to play a game of hockey before his performance, which was an offer he said he couldn’t turn down.

“It’s nice, it’s a chance to step away from doing interviews and all that stuff , to play hockey and have fun,” said Bentley.

Bentley said he started to play hockey about 10 years ago. He even compared the game to some of his performances.

“I think our show is kind of like a hockey game a little bit. We have six guys on the ice, guys on the stage, we kind of approach it the same way. We want to get out there and get a win.”

Members of the Bloomington Police and Fire Departments, PrairieThunder and B104′s Kevin and JD also joined him on the ice.

Dierks & Cody Celebrate 500th CMT Radio Live!

Dierks Bentley was a guest on the very first show and recently helped Cody Alan celebrate the 500th episode of CMT Radio Live! That calls for cake!

Broadcast on radio stations across America, CMT Radio Live with Cody Alan originates from Nashville and is CMT’s premiere country music and entertainment radio show. Cody’s wit, energy and charm shine with big star guests and live interaction with listeners.  That's why he was named the ACM 2010 National On Air Personality of the Year! Dierks says, “Cody’s show always feels fresh and current. Cody cares about country music’s past and future, and has always worked to make his shows exciting, interesting and personal.”

During the 7-minute interview, Dierks asks Cody to dish on the highlights of the 500 shows.  Cody admits Dolly Parton was memorable and Dierks shared his favorite Dolly story.  Listen to find out why DB was horrified!

On the subject of hockey, Cody wanted to know what penalties Dierks is known for and if he's ever been hurt.  Dierks jokes he's had more injuries running around on stage (I have witnessed some of those falls in person!). The topic turns to babies and Dierks tells the story of Jordan's Christmas birth and offers to trade birthdays.  What a good daddy!

DIERKS GRABBED THE WRONG TOWEL

Dierks posted this pic and caption on Twitter, which incidentally made the GAC Top Ten Tweets of the Week!

@DierksBentley: I believe I may have grabbed the wrong towel before heading out the door to play hockey tonight…

I'm guessing one Evie Bentley was not a happy camper!

EVIE BENTLEY: APPLE OF DADDY DIERKS EYE

(Photo: CountryWeekly-June29-09)

Little Evie Bentley is coming up on 16 months old, and naturally is the apple of daddy Dierks Bentley's eye. She's sporting T-shirts and posing for pictures in all the things daddy loves:
"I took a picture of her today and she's wearing a Station Inn t-shirt and holding a hockey stick, and those are two things that pretty much would sum up who I am. I love acoustic music, that's where I got my start, and I'm crazy about playing hockey!" Dierks told theboot.com.

I'm wondering if she ever got to wear the DB Congress shirt I gave Dierks at Last Call Ball last June--or maybe she's grown out of that size already!

DIERKS' HOCKEY WALL OF HONOR

What's this? Dierks Bentley sporting a full beard and mustache? Yes, there's that (not sure I likey that), but this pic is showing off his Sea Dogs hockey jersey that was presented to him in September 2009 before a performance in Saint John.

Bentley was in the city as part of the sold-out show at Harbour Station featuring Brad Paisley and he proudly unveiled it between songs to a roaring-approval of the crowd of 7,000.

Dierks said he was going to hang it on his "Hockey Wall of Honor," located in his garage at his Nashville home.

"I got a huge thrill out of getting the jersey. It's something I don't take lightly, either. I mean, lots of teams give out jerseys to guys coming through town but this is unique. Not everyone has a Sea Dogs jersey."

For those who don't know, Dierks plays for the Nashville Ice Holes when he's not on the road performing.

BENTLEY: WATERLOO BLACK HAWK TODAY

Dierks Bentley is getting lots of hockey practice in lately. Conspicuously missing from the CMA Awards (*that is soooo wrong!), Dierks was playing a little late night hockey with a local Nashville team Wednesday night.

Then, this morning, he picked up some practice time with the Waterloo, Iowa Black Hawks, where he's performing his night job as country artist, singer, songwriter, entertainer tonight--probably as I type this.

WCSCourier.com wrote an article with some killer pictures and a video of Dierks and the team.

Country music star Dierks Bentley celebrates a goal as he practices with the Waterloo Black Hawks at their morning practice session at Young Arena Friday, Nov. 13, 2009. Bentley, a huge hockey fan, was in town for a Friday evening concert at McElroy Auditorium. (RICK CHASE / Courier Staff Photographer)

Dierks himself posted a few Twitter pics and that distinctly DB humor on the topic:

"good news: about to skate with the waterloo black hawks...bad news: can't find my cup. #fb"

"pic with the waterloo back hawks after practice.several of the guys wanted to know if i could hook them up with @taylorswift13 .good dudes #fb"

"I usually get a workout in before a show and this is a lot more fun than going to the gym," Bentley said when the morning pre-skate was over. "I just love playing hockey."

"The funny thing is I'd like to get these guy's autograph as much as they'd like to get mine," said Bentley. "I'm a huge fan of hockey, and these guys are so accomplished…I'm trying to bring hockey and country music a little closer." ~USHL

FEEL THAT FIRE ON ICE

Valerie emailed me recently to join the Congress. She sent me this interesting review that she sent me and said I could use if I wanted. I read it and thought it was COOL! ;) Thanks Valerie!

FEEL THAT FIRE ON ICE!

I GOT TO BE DIERKS BENTLEY'S HOCKEY MOM FOR A DAY!

BY VALERIE D. (little_white_tank_topped_miss)

Dierks had announced during the Saturday night concert (Mystic Lake Casino, Prior Lake, Minnesota on Saturday, April 25, 2009) that he would be playing hockey at 11am the next day. During the Meet and Greet that evening he had said that he had played that morning across the street. So I just Googled Ice Arena and found the Dakota! Ice Rink next door to the casino. Apparently, Dierks had told the radio station that had coordinated the games NOT to announce them to the fans on the air.

(Dierks was wearing a New York t-shirt and I grew up in New York. I was wearing my OPRY little white tank top and Dierks lives in Nashville. What a great coincidence!)

Here’s what happened at the Dakota! Ice Rink: I was the only Dierks fan there. It was a really strange experience to be alone at a place where Dierks would be “performing.” I met Dierks when he walked into the rink with a couple of other guys. I walked right up to him and said, “Hi, Darlin’! I came to watch you play. Which rink will you be on?” He laughed and said, “I don’t know. I’m just following him.” The guy he was with said it was Rink 1. I watched Dierks walk back towards the locker room and before he followed the guy down the hall he looked back at me and then said to the guy, “
That’s Valerie.” I figured that guy was shocked that any fan was there and couldn’t believe that Dierks would know anyone who lived in Minnesota!

I went into the arena and positioned myself next to the door to the ice. The players were trickling in from the locker rooms. I had my camera set to video and my trigger finger ready. As Dierks appeared at the end of the hall I got a video of him walking towards me. When he reached me he let me take a picture of him. He was wearing his ICEHOLES jersey with BENTLEY 7 on the back. I got the first two pictures of him with that shirt on.

Then Dierks changed into a black U of M sweatshirt for the game. (The shirt has a large M in maroon and gold.) He was on the black team and his ICEHOLES shirt was mostly white. He scored a number of times.

(Dierks Bentley Heating up the Ice @ Dakota! Ice Rink in Prior Lake, Minnesota on April 26, 2009.)

Dierks scored a goal and then raised his stick up in the air. Then he skated over to the fans and tapped on the glass with his stick. It was really fun to watch him. He loved the cheering section! There were six of us fans there all together.

Here is a video from the game that Valerie recorded too!

_________________________________________

Valerie wasn't the only DBC member who attended the concert and hockey game! Mona and Tiffany went as well!

MONA's comments:
Dierks announced at the show Sat night that he was playing the next day. About 6-7 of us showed up. I think most of us were Congress members! Val, Tiffany, the Samwhich Sams, another fc member whose name I don't remember, and a friend of Sam's. The rink was around the back of the casino, very easy to find.

I wore my Congress hoodie that weekend. It's a good thing as it was cold and rainy, but I wasn't cold at the hockey rink. I don't care for major league, but I do enjoy locals. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Dierks and Rod play. No Rod wasn't the goalie, but his team was pretty good! There were three females playing and they were good! Rod and Dierks were on opposite teams. We enjoyed being Dierks cheering section when he scored! I must say Rod's
team had a much better goalie!

Dierks spent a few minutes with us afterward, which was so sweet of him. We really didn't get to talk to him very much, at least I didn't. He did sign a couple of hockey pucks that had been used in the game. He didn't say anything about my hoodie. I am sure he noticed it however, it would be impossible to not see it. Val told him about one of the songs she discovered others had recorded before Dierks. Others told him what songs they really liked. I didn't have my camera; I only had my cell phone and I didn't get a very good pic of D and I.

At the hockey game, my little black Dierks mobile was parked right beside the vehicle Dierks was riding in. We walked him out after the game, but it was raining a little so I don't know if he noticed the back end with the DB logo.

TIFFNMILES Comments:
That was a great experience to watch him play hockey!! I think Dierks enjoyed having us there!

NEW PUBLIC JOURNAL - 2/21/09

Dierks posted a new Public Journal on dierks.com and on his MySpace:

from the depths of canada...
Posted: February 21, 2009
whats up everyone. we are pretty far along in our canadian tour with brad and the shows have been great...as have the extracurricular hockey activities. i had a chance to play a lunchtime pickup game in hamilton, skated solo in winnapeg and just practiced shooting, played "pond" hockey on a watered down section of cement in windsor, and got to practice with the saskatoon blades in...saskatoon. that was a huge highlight...checkout the link saskatoon blades..."dierks bentley practices with blades" under the 'blades video' player on the right of the homepage.

there is also some footage from the pond hockey game where i took a huge digger (whats new...do it on stage at least twice a year!)...but thats for fan club only for now...that one hurt and is fairly embarrassing!

speaking of footage..im working on putting together a piece that has all the album release week craziness...its taking me awhile to assemble all the footage but i think you will love it. new york, LA, daytona and everything in between. it will be may thank you to you guys for all the support youve given me and the album...and for the number one song and album. very humbling...very awesome. i post my affection for the folks in our fan club on that journal fairly regularly...but for anyone just cruising by the website that isnt in the fan club but has been part of supporting my career: thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the support...thanks for giving me and my band and crew and all the folks that have worked hard on this album and its release a great ride! ill get this footage put together asap!

God bless,
d

If you're in the DB Fan Club, go to dierks.com, media, videos and check out the new video in All Access! Dierks plays hockey on a little rink in Canada Sunday night after the 2/15/09 show! "This is the wierdest thing I've ever done after a show...the most fun you can have on a Sunday night at midnight!"

SOME REDNECKS LIKE HOCKEY

The blog "PUCK THE MEDIA" has something to say about Dierks Bentley and his inclination towards hockey. For this good ol’ country boy, it was just another opportunity to squeeze his ever-burgeoning love of hockey into a life that moves as fast-paced as any. While he may have had anything but a “typical” hockey upbringing, he’s been hooked on the game since the Predators moved in to share his hometown.
Read all about it HERE
