"What The Hell Did I Say" Hits The Airwaves Monday (Plus A NEW Music Video!)

The fourth single to be released from Dierks Bentley's Black album, What The Hell Did I Say, is sure to climb the charts in a hurry. Can this summer anthem continue the trend and hit No. 1 like the three singles to come before it?

"We named the tour after this song hoping that it would be a single this summer because it perfectly captures the anything-goes spirit out there this year," Dierks explains.

Mission accomplished.

Though not a song penned by Dierks himself, it was written by the team who, with Dierks, wrote his single Drunk On A Plane--Ross Copperman, Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins. He knew he needed to have it on the album.

"I've learned over the years of making records that ... it's okay to have some of those fun songs on there," he shares.

It certainly brings a care-free spirit to the album and the tour, not to mention the social media craze with #WTH.

A song filled with regret, and a potential hangover, WTHDIS follows a man who clearly blacked out the night before. Waking up to a call saying "I loved every single word you left on my phone" leads the caller to try to determine "what the hell" he said last night.

The momentum-carrying intro practically begs the subject of the song to get it into gear to figure out what happened. The baseline teases of potential trouble in what he said. The chorus slams into the frustration (and humor) of not being able to remember. By the time you hit the bridge, you really start to get concerned (did he propose? promise expensive gifts?). While you never reach the answer, the journey is a sobering one set to a party song tune.

"My fans are really patient on this record [Black]," Dierks said in a recent media event. "We've taken a lot of twists and turns: Somewhere on a Beach was different. Different for Girls was different for me. And then Black, for that to go No. 1, it's not the typical song that does that. [My fans have] been really patient allowing us to do stuff. So to come back with a song that's a real down-the-middle, fun party song--it's kind of a good summer song, and I'm excited about it."

The new music video, filmed last month in Tampa on the WTH tour, was released at midnight EST. Watch it here:

Putting the #1 in 5-1-5-0!

Well, Dierks held off Kenny and proudly sits atop the Country charts this week with "5-1-5-0!" Yeah! 

Here are some highlights and fun facts:

• "5-1-5-0" ties "Sideways" as Dierks' fastest chart-climber, at 18 weeks
• "5-1-5-0" is the first Country chart topper to have a title that consists entirely of numbers!
• This marks Dierks' third consecutive #1 single
• This is the second time Dierks has scored 3-in-a-row: He previously did it with Come a Little Closer, Settle for a Slowdown, and Every Mile a Memory over the course of two albums
• This marks the first time Dierks has had 3 #1 singles from the same album
• And ... this is Dierks' 10th #1!!!

Making the Penthouse "Home"

I've been waiting and waiting for this day to come, to be able to write this blog, and now the moment presents itself and I can't quite put into words what I'd like to say. So many thoughts running through my head ... 

Congratulations, Dierks! In its 24th week, the anthemic, ACM "Song of the Year" nominated "Home" moved into the penthouse on the charts, becoming the 9th Number 1 song for our Prez. The final stats (remember, the two charts have different reporting panels):

Billboard: 35.701 Million Audience, 5722 Plays
Mediabase: 41.266 Million Audience, 6236 Plays

"Home" also completed its radio run as the #1 song on the Radio Feedback Chart, and #3 on Callout America, a sign that the song resonated with the public, as well. 

And how. Here's what American Songwriter had to say about the song in their recent album review: 

Most telling, though, is “Home,” an important entry in post-post-9/11 country songwriting. Patriotism is a subject closely associated with country music and it’s often been tackled ham-handedly, with all the depth and complexity of a bumper sticker slogan. This song of Bentley’s is a notable exception. Employing symbolism that’s meaningful yet malleable, simple yet eloquent, set to a spacious, billowing melody, he embraces the possibility that many different kinds of people can claim heartfelt ownership of our history-scarred nation. And as it happens, at the time of this writing, the song is climbing Billboard’s Country Songs chart. That’s the kind of broad resonance Bentley is capable of.

In a recent interview with CMT, co-writer Dan Wilson said he definitely hopes he's able to write another song with Dierks. He also mentioned that he didn't have a specific reason to visit Nashville right now.

Well, Dan, it looks like you'll have a party to attend in the very near future.

Dierks Bentley: Behind The Song in Country Weekly

In the September 19, 2011 issue of Country Weekly, Dierks Bentley is featured in a 2-page 'behind the song' article, applauding his latest number one single, "Am I The Only One?"

Co-written with Jon Randall Stewart and Jim Beavers, Dierks said, "We came up with the story line and injected some of my actual real friends' names into the song."

Am I the Only (Number) One?

This week, Dierks Bentley is the "only one" sitting at Number One! Congratulations, Dude, on your 8th #1 hit, and a huge thank you to all the DB Congress for helping to get him there!

Dierks Bentley closes a gap of more than two years at No. 1, as “Am I the Only One” draws 39.2 million audience impressions and becomes his first leader since “Sideways” ruled for two weeks in July 2009. The new chart-topper is Bentley’s eighth, a list that boasts three consecutive No. 1s between December 2005 and November 2006. He first led with debut single “What Was I Thinkin’” in September 2003. Reaching the summit in its 22nd chart week “Am I the Only One” is the artist’s second-longest No. 1 climb—he needed 24 weeks with “What Was I Thinkin’.” His best time to No. 1 was 17 weeks with “Every Mile a Memory” in late 2006.

Now, we're pushing for a 2nd week, but it's going to be more difficult. The song is still picking up gains over last week (which is better than Lady A was doing this time last week when they were #1) but it's starting to lose points to Remind Me on Mediabase and the audience appears to have peaked. So, we'll see! But keep calling and requesting it - just don't drive the DJs TOO crazy - we'll need them in a few weeks when "Home" is released. (As of today, there is not an official radio date for the next single.)

SIDEWAYS SWINGS INTO 7th NUMBER ONE FOR DIERKS

One sure-fire way of getting a Dierks song to No. one is to light a match under the 500+ DB Congress reps. And they blazed a trail straight to NUMBER ONE, making SIDEWAYS the seventh single of Dierks Bentley's career to top the charts, and two No. One's in a row from his Feel That Fire CD that also debuted in the top spot!

According to Country Aircheck's mid-year airplay report, Bentley trails only megastar Keith Urban as the most played male artist on country radio so far this year. Bentley's undeniable appeal has garnered the attention of national media outlets with MSN's prediction that Bentley is "poised to reach country's most elite level," and this week Forbes named Bentley to its Top 10 list of "Next Breakout Stars" based on likeability and awareness.

DIERKS HONORED AT #1 PARTY

CMT.com provided the particulars and photos of Dierks Bentley's March 6 Number One Party for Feel That Fire, his sixth single to hit the top spot on the charts.

In addition to Dierks, the other three co-writers of the song: Brett Beavers, Brad Warren and Brett Warren, along with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill joined in the celebration.

An ASCAP representative presented Bentley a guitar and a plaque for his latest achievement.
