Free & Easy...Across the US I Go

I truly dislike flying, but if there is one person that would get me to fly across the country for a show it would be Dierks Bentley. In fact, I have done it once before back in April of 2012 for two of his shows in California. So when I won tickets to Vegas for the ACMs, I put the fear aside again and booked a solo DRT flight. I mean, Dierks was playing the ACM Party For A Cause, so how could I not take advantage of the tickets? The whole Vegas experience was pretty amazing. If you love country music then you would be in heaven for three days. The real highlight, of course, was the show Saturday night at the ACM Party For A Cause at the Orleans Hotel where Dierks was the headliner.

On this trip, I met up with fellow DBC reps that I met through twitter: Shannon Bunting and Meredith Mauer. We never met in person prior to Vegas, but from the minute we met, it felt like an old friendship. I owe many thanks to these terrific ladies who were able to secure me a gold band to be in the VIP area with them. We also got to catch up with DBC reps David Watts and his wife Jamie. The DB Congress was representing in full force.

Saturday we got in line at noon to wait for Dierks and the guys. They were not going on until about 8pm, but if you are in the Congress you know getting there early is normal behavior. During that time we got to see Love and Theft, EYB and Hunter Hayes perform. The crowd thinned out a bit after Hunter, but it was still crowded. After being in the sun all day, our enthusiasm was not waning. Our energy, though, was definitely brought back up when the guys finally emerged at dusk playing "Am I The Only One".  The songs we love continued with "5-1-5-0", "Sideways" and "Up On the Ridge". Even in a parking lot in Vegas, Dierks managed to interact with his fans like he always does by handing out high fives, fist pumps and even lying on the stage to reach out to fans.

Before the show, the announcer had said that Dierks would have a few surprises for us. Well, that he did. Dierks said he "had this song in his head all day". While he was strumming a few notes on the guitar, out walked Sheryl Crow! They sang "Picture", the duet she had originally performed with Kid Rock, together. Then she sang "If It Makes You Happy". You could tell from their interactions, the two are clearly friends. They looked like they were having a terrific time together, and their good time was contagious.

After a few more songs out came surprise #2: Tim McGraw. Tim did not sing, but rather came out to talk about Operation Homefront. This is a group that gives mortgage free homes to soldiers. A male soldier who just returned from Afghanistan was given a new home that night. In addition, they presented him and his family with a check for $10,000 from the ACM charity Lifting Lives to help get them started in their new home. Looking around during this ceremony, there did not seem to be a dry eye in the audience. All the while, Dierks was beaming. You could tell he was not only thankful for the military and their service, but also thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful moment.

The night ended appropriately with HOME. Although it was back to my home in NY the next day, I know this is one of those trips I'll never forget and also eagerly await the next one!

Listen to Dierks Dish on Daytona

Normally, Dierks Bentley loves to hear the crowd sing along to his lyrics--but this time was different.  Listen as Pittsburgh's Y108 Monty and Zeke talk to Dierks about his new NASCAR version of Sideways, and the challenge of singing it live to fans.  Dierks will perform at Stage AE on the North Shore on March 20!

Dierks Bentley's Best Pick Up Line

Not only did Dierks Bentley's song, Sideways, hit the top of the Billboard charts in 2009, it also made The Boot's Top Ten list for best pick up line lyrics.  Coming in at #6 is Bentley's, "Hey, girl, what's your name?/It's so loud in here I can't hear a thing/But I sure do like your style."

According to the Boot:

'Sideways,' Dierks Bentley Compliment a girl's clothes and you're in! Dierks shares his best lines for wooing ladies in little white tank tops. If only delivering a good pickup line were as easy as getting sideways
The song also got the attention of FOX and NASCAR, who recently commissioned DB to record and perform a special version of the song to rev up each race this season!

We're creating our own Top Ten List and we need your help! What Dierks "love" lyrics do you think should make the "DB Valentine's Day" list?  DB Congress reps and fans, leave a comment and we'll have a contest!

February of Firsts For Dierks

After an emotional week long live video (and sometimes audio) feed from the recording studio in Asheville, NC, Dierks Bentley has a February full of firsts ahead of him.  Not only has no other artist ever invited fans into the recording process as they were working on an album, but modern technology allowed him to interact with fans through the U-Stream chat as well, throughout the week.  It was an awe inspiring experience to say the least!

As if that wasn't enough, Dierks will perform along with Jack Ingram at the "Bud Light Hotel," dubbed the biggest tailgate party in Dallas, prior to Super Bowl XLV on Sunday (Feb. 6). The performance will air online here.

That takes us to Feb 12, where Bentley will travel to Los Angeles for a Dierks Bentley & Friends pre-GRAMMY show at the Troubadour before presenting on February 13 at the 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards live on CBS. Bentley is nominated for Best Country Album for his critically acclaimed "Up On The Ridge," and Best Country Collaboration With Vocals for the album’s “Bad Angel” featuring Miranda Lambert and Jamey Johnson and “Pride (In The Name Of Love)” featuring Del McCoury and Punch Brothers. *Fingers crossed for the10-time Grammy nominee to bring home a trophy!

Another first for Dierks includes a commission by NASCAR to record a special version of his Number One hit, "Sideways," for Fox Sports in 2011. The song will be the theme song and air prior to all races throughout the season. Bentley will debut the song live from the Daytona 500 on February 20.  FOX is the exclusive television home to the Daytona 500 along with 12 other point races during the year.

We are so proud of our DB Congress President and wish him luck on all his "firsts" in February 2011!

Dierks Wins Triple Play Award From CMA

(Pictured (L-R): Steve Moore (CMA CEO), Dierks Bentley, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Darius Rucker, Brad Paisley, Victoria Shaw (songwriter and Chair of CMA’s Community Outreach & Education Committee), Taylor Swift, Alan Jackson, and Gary Overton (CMA Board President).)

It was three cheers for three No. 1s at the annual CMA Songwriters Luncheon with the presentation of the CMA Triple Play Awards, which honor songwriters who pen three chart-topping hits in a 12 month period.

“This is an amazing accomplishment and we are very pleased to honor these talented songwriters, and songwriting artists, for their valued contribution to the format,” said Steve Moore, CMA Chief Executive Officer. “These songwriters captivate fans with stories that sum up the heart and humor of everyday life. They give voice and context to the challenges and triumphs we all face. They each have a rare talent that is a gift for all of us to enjoy.”

The Triple Play Awards were presented at the Second Annual CMA Songwriters Luncheon, which was held at the Pinnacle at Symphony Place in Nashville and attended by several artist/songwriters including Dierks Bentley, Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and Keith Urban in addition to hit tunesmiths from ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC, as well as songwriter members of CMA, NSAI, and representatives of some of the most successful publishers in Music City.
“The first day I moved to this town, I was 19 years old. I had no problem finding where the bars were but I had no idea how to get a boot into this community or how to get started, or anything. I got a job interning at CMA to try to figure out how to even begin to get moving. So this is really cool. I don’t take for granted anything that involves CMA.” -Dierks Bentley.
Dierks was one of many recipients of CMA’s Triple Play Award. He won for “Feel That Fire,” “Sideways,” and “I Wanna Make You Close Your Eyes.”

Dierks Bentley Wins BIG at 2010 ASCAP Awards

Dierks Bentley's 2010 just got a a whole lot better! Not only did he perform with his bluegrass buddies the Travelin' McCoury's at the ASCAP Country Music Awards, he also captured two of the evenings top honors:

A special musical tribute to Jackson included remarkable performances of several of his hits by Steve Earle, Dierks Bentley and Chris Young. Dierks performed Jackson's "Midnight in Montgomery" and his own "Sideways."

Dierks said thank you on Facebook and Twitter: “@ASCAP: The Songwriter/Artist of the year Award goes to @dierksbentley" thx ASCAP and the nash songwriting community. a BIG deal 4 me #fb"

We are so proud of our DBC president! I think 2010 is going to be a very BIG year for you, Dierks! You are finally getting the recognition you deserve for your extraordinary talent!

DIERKS BENTLEY IN DAYTONA BEACH

Although Dierks Bentley in Daytona Beach was a free show, it came with a price. Verizon sponsored the event at the V-Lounge--(how appropriate for V-Day weekend), which is normally a "right-on-the-beach" stage behind The Ocean Deck Bar and Grill. But the weather wanted no part of cooperating, and it raised it's ugly gusts up to 40mph, rained relentlessly, and brought with it a chill to the air.

Driving 4 hours from Tampa (normally only 2.5) in the pouring down rain, wrapped up in the warmth of my Dierks Bentley hoodie, and thanking the hubby every hour for doing the driving, all I could hear in my head was DB singing, You Hold Me Together from the Feel That Fire album:
"By now I should've been broken,
On the rocks that rise from life's ocean,
Just another ship lost at sea
By now I should've been scattered
In the wind of my lonesome travels
Like a thousand dandelion seeds
And I should've come unraveled
At the seams like a well worn sweater
But you hold me together"
I knew it wasn't likely D would sing my favorite FTF song that night, but the surrounding images screamed these lyrics to me!

We arrived around 3 pm and scoped out the place. We talked to The Ocean Deck and Verizon staffers and everyone was giving us a different version of what the plans were. Food was good, but no tables, so we shared with another couple--Betty and Warren from IL. Big NASCAR fans! The girls from Verizon posed for a pic:

Winning VIP passes and Meet & Greets via the DB Fan Club was supposed to get us special seating by the stage in addition to the M&G. But due to the weather and high tide, the event got moved in doors--and all hopes of VIP seating were dashed! Not that anyone can control Mother Nature. We found out that Dierks actually made the decision to move it indoors for safety reasons.

First in line for the Meet & Greet--that is a first! Usually I'm last, but with 100 behind us, we wanted to try to get in to the VIP area! Can't you just hear Ricky Bobby saying, "If ya ain't first, yer last!" Brittany and Chris told us there was a photographer to take pics and they would print them for us by night's end. Could not use our own camera, and no autographs.

I brought my copy of the 2009 DB Congress yearbook I made and sent to him since I didn't know if he had received the original. He said he had, but would love a second copy and that he really liked it. So I gave it to him along with a letter for him and one for Tim. Took a pic with hubby and me and time to move on. Shortest M&G ever. Just as well, since we wanted to make our way to the VIP area ASAP!

Big mistake on my part thinking we (the DB fan-clubbers) were the "only" VIPs--there were probably 100+ others. And since everyone inside The Ocean Deck had already been there all afternoon, we had to squeeze through a sea of hundreds to get to the make-shift VIP area--which was a pit of sorts.

Normally I love being in the pit for Dierks, but last night was the worst I have ever been in--literally we were all squished in on all four sides. Luckily hubby is taller than me, so he stood behind me and took photos. About 3/4 of the way through the show, the fire marshall came in and offered a choice: Clear the aisles (what aisles?) and go outside to listen to the show via the Verizon tent speakers, or shut down the show. All those who volunteered to go outside got a free drink. Funny thing is, it got WORSE after that up front! What?

While all of that may have been the "price," the show was the reward! Verizon hosted a quick Q&A with the NASCAR Nationwide series drivers #22 Brad Keselowski and birthday boy Justin Allgaier, Verizon's #12, and they both introduced Dierks!

Dierks and the guys kicked it off with hot harmonies on Dixieland Delight! I've never heard them sing this live--what a treat!

The rest of the set list had the party rockin' just right! A few songs in, and Dierks asked the crowd to shout out requests. Everyone wanted Sideways but he said he had to work up to that one..."I gotta BE sideways to sing Sideways!"

Dierks told us how he loved being back performing in the small bar setting, apologized for having to move it inside but that just got him closer to the bar and asked for a shot of...who knows what. That cup was never empty all night and the Bud Lights flowed freely.

Then (not sure of the order), Life on the Run--D changed up the lyrics and since the stage was so small Robbie had no mic, but was definitely singing his "low low low low" part. In fact, Dierks got playful with a lot of lyrics last night. Like on I Wanna Make You Close Your Eyes ("If you need a little bit of help from "Steve"...Sorry, Steve, I've never seen you in a vest before!").

As usual, Every Mile a Memory was customized for the locale ("Florida stars...Daytona night). So So Long and How Am I Doin' were dedicated to all the Ex BFs and GFs. Trying To Stop Your Leaving, Little Heartwrecker, Feel That Fire were all sang straight with lots of that Dierks Bentley moxie-grit emotion! With Free and Easy he interjected, "I keep rollin' like Tim's old banjo," and before Lot of Leavin' Left To Do, Dierks had this to say:

Come A Little Closer and Settle For A Slowdown were the only two slow songs besides 'Eyes, but every word and note was perfection!

Covers included Hank Jr.'s Family Tradition--where the crowd went wild...but it was not my favorite vocal from him--sorry dude, what melody was that?

On the flip side, he started out "I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison, and I went to pick her up in the rain..." David Allan Coe would've been proud! After that verse though, he stopped and said "That's not the perfect country song cos it doesn't say anything about Little White Tanks Tops! Then launched into What Was I Thinkin'...more fan participation.

Closing the night with Last Call: "It's not last call but that's the name of this song," Rod rocked it on the electric guitar. But I really wanted to hear the fiddle from the recorded version! Kristi Jo, where were you?

No stage diving/"surfing" and no fans on stage...absolutely no room. All 5 of them had to stay in the same spot all night! Steve only had half drums--not the full set he's used to.

Despite the pushing and shoving and sardine-ness, if I had been front row on the rail, and had elbow and breathing room, it would have been one of the best shows I've ever experienced.

After the singing, Dierks signed a few autographs, hugged Kasey Kahne's mom and left the stage. I tried to get a set list or a pick--no luck. At the last minute Jay called me back; he had found Dierks' Thomas O'Brien, thick, black, 100% cotton,"towel" and gave it to me. If ya ain't first, yer last!

Met Kasey Kahne's mom, Tammy and got a pic. She was so nice!

We then made our way back to the Verizon tent to pick up our M&G photos and I had totally forgotten about the autographed poster and a swag bag with a t-shirt and other goodies! What a cool suprise! Thanks, Verizon!

It was great to see/meet some DB Congress reps (Keesha, Ann, Lissa). The drive back to Tampa was a lot faster than the ride to the beach. Dierks is always worth it.

Next DRT: Orlando, Feb. 27-Universal Studios Mardi Gras!

YOU'RE NEVER TOO YOUNG--OR OLD TO BE A DIERKS FAN!

Granny Ann has been a Dierks Bentley fan since...well, seems like forever. She was the first DB Fan Club Member to reach out to me as a newbie in 2005, and we've been friends ever since. She's the one who prompted me to start a thread three years ago on dierks.com to rally Fan-clubbers to help Long Trip Alone move up the video countdown charts...and that's when I thought, "It's gonna take an act of congress!" That and watching Dierks' 2006 interview saying his Fan Club was like his congress.

Ann convinced her whole family to be a DB fan, including her grandson, Grayson. Here is a video of Grayson singing Sideways. "I just thought it was so cute and so natural of two little children enjoying Dierks' music," says Ann. Grayson is only 3 and Skyler is 4.

Ann took Grayson to his first Dierks Bentley concert in Atlanta, Georgia in August 2009 at The Tabernacle. "He didn't fall asleep until about half through the show. I've never seen anyone so amazed at a concert like he was," Ann admits. "Grayson reminds me of the little boy in Randy Houser's video, "Boots On" because he is always singing in his car seat. He loves Zac Brown, "Chicken Fried", Billy Currington, "God is great, beer is good and people are crazy" and so many more songs. He's just like his grandmother, he just loves country music."

Granny Ann is one of the original DB Congress dozen, proudly representing Alabama.

STAGE DIVE'S BOLD COMEBACK. WHAT WAS SHE THINKIN'?

A while back, we told you the story of DB Congress Illinois rep, Stacy. Shy, shy, Stacy, who got coaxed by Dierks Bentley to go 'stage diving' into the crowd with him. Now, a few years later, she's on stage with him again! Follow along as we get a little Sideways and try something a little different than a normal blog. Stacy and I had a "chat" on Facebook about her Harris, Michigan DRT. Listen in...

Ronna: So how did you manage to get on stage?
Stacy: I made a sign that said "Came 400 miles to get 'Sideways' onstage" lol

Ronna: OMG! shut up!
Stacy: lol

Ronna: So what did Dierks say?
Stacy: In my m&g or onstage? lol

Ronna: Oh you had a M&G too! Is that where you showed him the sign? Did he invite you to go stage diving again?
Stacy: No no..I made the sign in the bathroom quick..lol

Ronna : haha so he saw it from the stage and...
Stacy: lol..no he didn't! We "watched a movie."

Ronna: I can see that in the pic! So did he just ask you to come up on stage and watch a movie?
Stacy: Yep..read my sign to everyone and pulled me on the amp and goes "you like movies stace?" lol

Ronna: I love it!
Stacy: It was great!

Ronna: Then what?
Stacy: He starts the intro to What Was I Thinkin', and goes "who is the curly haired dork?" lol and I go "I don't know but he's cute" lol

Ronna: You did not! Good come back line, btw!
Stacy: Did too! lol He just laughed his great laugh we all love..lol

Ronna: OMG! Much braver than your last time on stage with D! So tell me about your M&G!
Stacy: This was on the 31st..I was in MI on the 30th though but not for the show. We saw D and some of the guys in the casino later that nite (Fr. the 30th) Wow my m&g..lol

Ronna: What did you have signed?
Stacy: My Country Weekly's he was on..lol

Ronna: Cool...which one? with Jake or the other?
Stacy: I hid one issue inside the other and go "If you could sign the other one for me too I'd love ya even more" lol. He goes "Of course!"

Ronna: So how did the Q&A portion of the Meet and Greet go?
Stacy: Someone asked him what he dressed up as for Halloween as a kid and he said, "As superheros."

Ronna: Cutest pic ever of Evie in her Yoda costume!
Stacy: Yeah..she's such a cutie! Looks just like Cass!

Ronna: Any other juicy Q&A from the M&G?
Stacy: Sounds like he'll be headlining next year! Said he plans to play smaller venues! :)

Ronna: YEAH!
Stacy: I about screamed..lol

Ronna: I am turning XX on March 4 and so hoping for a show on that date. I told hubby even if it was Australia I was going to see Dierks ON my bday!
Stacy: Heck yeah!! I'm hoping he'll be in the area around my bday in Jan.!

Ronna: That would be the ultimate!
Stacy: Oh yeah!

Ronna: So any other Q&A hilights?
Stacy: None that I can remember...unfortunately we were kinda rushed because of radio people behind us :(

Ronna: Dang those radio winners...they prob don't even know who he is!
Stacy: I know!

Ronna: On the other hand, maybe they don't but become fans because of his awesome M&G skills...haha

Ronna: So back to the stage...how did that happen?...did he help you up on stage?
Stacy: The stage was small so I was able to pull myself up..lol

Ronna: So he read your sign and he said to you....what?
Stacy: He reads it and just smiles at me..lol Then when we were able to go up to the stage I held it up one more time to remind him and he smiles again and points at me..lol

Ronna: One more kiss from my baby, a smile from a friend...
Stacy: :) So when I'm up there he goes "Where's your sign?" So I give it to him and he reads it to everyone and goes "Well, since I already did 'Sideways', do you like movies Stace?"

Ronna: So he pointed to you and motioned for you to climb up on the stage?
Stacy: Just pointed at me then came over to me and grabbed my hand and started to pull me up..lol

Ronna: O_M_G! Did you freak out? No, never mind...you've been on stage before...old hat to you! lol
Stacy: lol..I freaked! I was thinking to myself "Oh God, what have I gotten myself into?" lol So we sit on his amp and start watching "the movie" lol Then when it was over he goes "I gotta go Stace!" I go "Ok!" then back to the front row..lol

Ronna: HOW COOL! And people wonder why we go to his shows again and again and again... it's a different experience every time!
Stacy: I know!

Ronna: I don't know if I could've thought of a response on the fly like that! At least not a clever one like you!
Stacy: For some reason I was on at that point..lol

Ronna: I would've probably said "Duh--that's you Dierks" LOL
Stacy: How I managed to think straight, I'll never know..lol

Ronna: Aha! I just thought of a cool title for the blog....What Was SHE Thinkin?
Stacy: LOL! I like it!

A little later after this chat, Stacy sends me an email with all these pictures. Wait! She didn't tell me about any of this! What?

Ronna: OMG your m&g pic is so awesome! So tell me about the "Dierks" name on the truck, and is the Kristin Toon in the pic with you? And is she dressed as Dierks for Halloween?

Stacy: lol..Yeah that's Kristin with me! And she didn't dress up as D for Halloween but her boyfriend did! She was just playing around with the wig..lol. And the "Dierks" truck was seriously just along side us on the highway! It looks like it's a food company..lol. I flipped when I saw it and was like "Kristin look!!" So we had to take pics..lol.

*EDIT 11/13/09: Adding a few pics from Kristin (DBC rep in Illinois) ....
Stacy, Kristin and "Dierks"(aka Dave, rep name J3alz, Kristin's boyfriend in cosutme):

WAS DIERKS A HALLOWEEN HOOLIGAN?

According to theboot.com, Dierks Bentley loved Halloween, "...because as a rebellious little kid I thought it would be cool to go as a Ninja every time," he says. "It was my chance to go out and be mischievous. I'd blow up pumpkins and knock mailboxes off with baseball bats ... I'm so glad I have a daughter, oh my gosh!"

Dierks is in Michigan performing tonight and 30% of the fans voted to see him dressed up as a Hip-Hop Sideways dancer tonight! Will he do it? Maybe the DBC reps going to the show tonight can give us the scoop!

*EDIT: Found this on US99.com Chicago: Dierks Bentley and wife Cassidy are dressing daughter Evie in character for her first Halloween. Dierks explains, “Evie likes to play drums, but then she’ll take the drumstick and we’ll have like a sword fight and she kind of looks like a little Yoda. So we went online and got her a Yoda outfit — the ears and cape. But I’ll be on the road, of course, playing a gig as I am on any important date. I’ll get lots of good pictures though!”

DIERKS FAN GETS HER 'SEAT' SIGNED

Three weeks ago, California DB Congress rep, janetg only knew two people that listen to country music, so she decided to go to the October 3rd Irvine Dierks Bentley show alone. She got a great seat to see Dierks and a fan club Meet and Greet to boot.

"I took a pair of "SIDEWAYS" undies I bought on dierks.com. I was the only one that brought something made of fabric. He said, "These are nice!" and told me a white tank is always good (which I was wearing). He had me pull on one side so he could sign them! I was a bit nervous since it was my first time meeting him. A nice Dierks fan behind me put me at ease! Thanks to her I held back my tears of joy!

Dierks asked for any song requests and I quickly said, "Sweet and Wild!" "She's here (Sara Buxton)," he said, "yeah I might just do that--we haven't [sang the song together] in a while." AND HE DID!

This was an awesome experience! He is so nice! One sad thing is I had taken a book for Evie and I forgot it in my car! (there was no in's and out's so I couldn't go back to get it!) My anxious nerves made me forget, after I took like 2 hours at Borders to find the perfect book!
