Trucks and Cars and Planes, Oh My! Dierks Bentley Enjoys His Rides

Dierks Bentley loves to go fast. Whether he's touring non-stop for days or in one of his many motor vehicles--he's got a truck, a car, jeep, a motorcycle, a boat, a bus, an ATV and even a plane --everything but a train--could his next ride be a NASCAR stock car?  Check out this article/interview from nascar.com.
"I just took a lap in the pace car and I wish I could have taken it for a spin. I think I could do all right. I had go-karts as a kid and I raced them, so I think it be comparable (laughs). No, even just being in the pace car, sitting shotgun, going into the corners, going whatever speed we were going. I think in the backstretch we were going 140 and under 100 in the corners. Even that, you could feel the “G’s” and feel the pull and I could see how it would be pretty exhausting after doing that for real, three times the speed with other cars around you all day long..."
A week before the last race of the season, Dierks popped up on the schedule as the opening show before the Homestead Miami Speedway race on November 17.  Living in Florida, I couldn't pass it up!  So I drove 10 hours round trip, picked up Sherrie on the way, and ran in to Dierks in - of all places -- the fan zone.  How appropriate.  He saw us first-before we saw him-and took time to take a picture, thank us for coming and comment on our attire, before walking in to the media center-probably to do that interview.  I was reppin' the Miles and Music Shirt and Sherrie donned a little white tank top.  So we're thinkin' this last part could be about us!

On what it's like to learn from someone the impact a song has had on them:
You meet those fans and that’s what fuels you. Bumped into a couple out here that were wearing my stuff and they come out here and they are sweating, they’re sunburned, but they’re excited to be here and you use that little extra boost, not that you even need it. What we do does matter and these songs get woven into the thread of people’s lives.

In case you're wondering about Dierks' other rides, here is some history:

His Truck - Big White - has over 200,000 miles and is the subject of the first verse of  "I Hold On."

His Car - a 1967 Camero - caught fire one night and Charles Kelley from Lady A was there.

His Jeep - a 1977 CJ7 - is often spotted with Dierks driving through parking lots of venues, saying hi to fans

His Motorcycle - a Harley - leads the pack every year at his Miles and Music For Kids Charity event

His Boat - a pontoon named the S.S. Grizzled Veteran - a houseboat he used to live on 10-12 years ago

His Bus- Old Goldie - turned a million - miles that is, somewhere around the Canada/US border last February.

His ATV - an end-of-tour gift from Miranda Lambert, ended up in a tree

His Plane - a custom Cirrus SR22T Xi - so he can get to and from shows, and back home to his family faster

Now about that train.... could it be true? "Train's a comin' / It'll be here 'fore too long."

Sadler Happy to Introduce Dierks Bentley in Richmond

Country superstar Dierks Bentley and NASCAR driver Elliott Sadler have a lot in common.  In any given weekend, they experience a lot of the same type activities.  There's sponsor appearances, autograph sessions, team meetings, media interviews and not to mention all of the on-stage/on-track performances.

But they take their down time very seriously.

The first time I saw Dierks and Elliott in the same room was at Wild Bill's in Atlanta.  It was March 2009, and Kasey Kahne was doing a benefit and Dierks was performing!  Elliot was there, too.

Bentley is no stranger to NASCAR either.  Earlier this year, he did a special version of his number one hit, Sideways for FOX Sports TV that started every race broadcast.  Dierks will perform at the Richmond International Raceway tomorrow night.

Sadler is happy about that!

"This week we head to what I consider my home track: Richmond. Like Bristol, Richmond is a track that I grew up going to with my family, so it's a special experience to go back and race there competitively. It's always important for me to do well, but there's always added pressure when your family is in the stands. I have family members that to this day still have reserved seats by the start/finish line there.

I do sometimes have the opportunity to have fun in my down time. In Richmond I will have the opportunity to introduce Dierks Bentley in a concert at the track. I love country music, so I think it should be a lot of fun!"

Does Dierks Bentley Have A New Hobby?

As if hockey and Harley's weren't enough for Dierks Bentley, could NASCAR be his next hobby?  DB performed Sideways--the NASCAR version at the All Star race tonight in Charlotte and got a gift from his buddy Tony Stewart.

Dierks tweeted: "a gift from my friend @tonystewart. fits just a tiny bit tighter than my hockey helmet. juuuuust a bit."

February of Firsts For Dierks

After an emotional week long live video (and sometimes audio) feed from the recording studio in Asheville, NC, Dierks Bentley has a February full of firsts ahead of him.  Not only has no other artist ever invited fans into the recording process as they were working on an album, but modern technology allowed him to interact with fans through the U-Stream chat as well, throughout the week.  It was an awe inspiring experience to say the least!

As if that wasn't enough, Dierks will perform along with Jack Ingram at the "Bud Light Hotel," dubbed the biggest tailgate party in Dallas, prior to Super Bowl XLV on Sunday (Feb. 6). The performance will air online here.

That takes us to Feb 12, where Bentley will travel to Los Angeles for a Dierks Bentley & Friends pre-GRAMMY show at the Troubadour before presenting on February 13 at the 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards live on CBS. Bentley is nominated for Best Country Album for his critically acclaimed "Up On The Ridge," and Best Country Collaboration With Vocals for the album’s “Bad Angel” featuring Miranda Lambert and Jamey Johnson and “Pride (In The Name Of Love)” featuring Del McCoury and Punch Brothers. *Fingers crossed for the10-time Grammy nominee to bring home a trophy!

Another first for Dierks includes a commission by NASCAR to record a special version of his Number One hit, "Sideways," for Fox Sports in 2011. The song will be the theme song and air prior to all races throughout the season. Bentley will debut the song live from the Daytona 500 on February 20.  FOX is the exclusive television home to the Daytona 500 along with 12 other point races during the year.

We are so proud of our DB Congress President and wish him luck on all his "firsts" in February 2011!

THE THREAD TIES MARTY ROBBINS TO DIERKS

Marty Robbins was born in Maricopa County, Arizona, only a few miles from where Dierks Bentley is from. It was only natural for Dierks to dedicate an hour of music on April 19, 2010, to and about another home town boy that successfully made his county music journey to Nashville.

Marty had a TV show on KPHO in Phoenix where he and Little Jimmy Dickens became friends which led to Marty's record deal. Dierks shared that his mom played "Devil Woman" a lot in his house growing up.
"The fact that Marty was from Arizona always made me feel a close connection to him."
Marty was a member of the Grand Ole Opry and was well known for his performances at the Opry, especially his habit of walking over and manually moving the clock back to 11:45, when they were supposed to be off the stage by midnight. He was a real renegade.

According to Eddie Stubbs, Marty would go out in front of the Grand Ole Opry House and sign autographs. Marty was also a NASCAR driver. He always tried to get on early for the Opry so he could run out to the track and race the same night.

Marty had a wide range of music and styles, and especially the western sound (as in El Paso). "For me being from the west, once it's in your bones it's kinda hard to get that out of it," Dierks said.

Partial Play List:
-Devil Woman
-I'll Go On, (First hit in 1952; a little Hank Williams sounding)
-White Sport Coat (and a pink carnation)
-Big Iron
-Cowboy in a Continental Suit
-Ruby Ann
-El Paso (#1 in 1960)
-El Paso City
-Singing The Blues (Dierks' fav!)
-Knee Deep In The Blues (An Elvis-type delivery)
-Don't Worry (#1 in '61; session guitar player Grady Martin created the fuzz affect by accident from this song)
-The Girl With Gardenias In Her Hair
-My Woman, My Woman, My Life (he won a Grammy for this one, dedicated to his wife of 22 years!)

Two of Marty's greatest accomplishments include becoming a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982 and being named Artist of the Decade by the Academey of Country Music.

KAHNE CHOOSES BENTLEY SONG FOR SHARPIE 500 INTRO

I wonder how many Sharpie's Dierks Bentley goes through in a typical tour month. With all the autograph signing and all the set lists taped to the stage floor, I'm guessing hundreds. And that's just the black ones. Then there's the silver Sharpies for signing the black DB Congress shirts. I always carry silver Sharpies--just in case!

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Personalities among NASCAR’s Sprint Cup drivers are as varied as their musical tastes. Fans will get more of an indication as to what might make their favorite drivers tick during driver introductions for the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway tomorrow night, Aug. 22 at 7:30 pm. Each driver was asked to walk out to the song of their choice.*

It's no secret that Dierks and driver Kasey Kahne are friends. So it's fitting that KK has chosen buddy Dierks Bentley’s “Life On The Run,” for his driver introduction song before the Sharpie 500! Great choice, Kasey!

Let's go racin' boys!

Somewhere in the distance is where I need to be
All I care about right now is speed

Here they come now, they're closin' in
Pack of blood hounds gonna catch my scent
Here they come now, now I'm gone again
Yeah

KAHNE & BENTLEY, BUDS FOR KIDS

In 2005, Kasey Kahne, driver of the #9 Budweiser Dodge in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, created the Kasey Kahne Foundation as a way to give back to chronically ill children and their families as well as disadvantaged youth. Every year the KKF raises funds for these deserving causes through several exciting events.
The Sound Check 9 benefit concert on March 5 in Duluth, Georgia (Wild Bill's) was one of those events, featuring Dierks Bentley, multi-platinum country music star. “I’ve been friends with Dierks for a while now,” said Kahne, a nine-time winner on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. “Dierks has been a long-time supporter of children’s charities, which is also the focus of the KKF. So teaming up on this concert is a good fit." All ticket proceeds go to the kids.

A special offering of 100 VIP Meet & Greet tickets with reserved seating sold for $150 per person. Reserved seating was $50, and General Admission was $30.

The latter was my budget this trip, and in my opinion, the best "non-seat" in the house! Re-united with many of my DRT (Dierks Road Trip) buddies from Atlanta last May, we all lined the front of the stage--the only place to experience a DB concert!

The evening kicked off with a question and answer session with Kahne, Elliott Sadler and Darrell Waltrip. Darrell asked Kasey how he and Dierks had become such good buddies and Kasey said they met at the Opry, got to talking, had a lot of the same interests--including NASCAR, country music, and children's charities. I recorded it, but there were several people in the audience talking loudly the whole time the interview was going on, even yelling at one point, "Stop talking and start singing!" How rude! After all--this WAS a benefit event--show some respect, people!
==========================================================================
DB Congress representative, Angie (choppergirl) drove down from South Carolina again this year. "This had to be one of the best Dierks shows ever and one of the funnest DRTs I've been on. The day started early as I met Keesh and the Dierks-mobile and we swung by and picked up my friend Teresa and hit I-85 in SC with the pedal to the medal to Georgia! We got to Wild Bill's between 11 and 12 to see a handful of Dierks fans there. We hung around and chatted a while, and listened to soundcheck outside the doors--they sounded awesome.

As the day goes on we get to see more fan club members, a lot that I hadn't seen in a long time. It was really exciting when we went inside knowing the time to see D was getting closer. Nascar drivers took the stage first--DW, Kasey and Elliott Sadler talked a while. That was awesome since I'm a big Nascar fan as well.

Soon here comes Dierks and the band and they rocked Wild Bills! He sang all our favorites including some of the new songs. Hearing Feel that Fire and Sideways in person was out of this world! The whole night Dierks was right there in front of us. Keesh had her night made as he twirled her around and held the mic for her to sing along!

Dierks, you and the guys were awesome! Cant wait for a chance to see you again! Thanks for coming out and talking to us by the bus before you left! Was great seeing so many fan club friends and great meeting new ones!" ========================================================================
DBentleyFan7 is a new DBC rep from Georgia. She didn't' have far to drive! "This was my very first Dierks show, I have been wanting to see him live for the longest time and finally did! He is crazy and I loved every second of it!

One group had a sign saying 'I wanna feel your fire' and he screamed at them saying 'YOU WANNA FEEL IT?! COME ON FEEL IT!' And then he ran so fast to them and just let everyone grab him that was in the crowd!

He knows how to put on a show, wow! I loved him before, but now I am head over heels for Dierks.

There was also a moment where Dierks looked mad and I don't blame him! A girl RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME got a hand slap from Dierks and then she just decided to grab his boot; he almost fell when he tried to go to the next group because that lady held onto his leg! He looked back at her and THREW her hands off of him! I can't say I'm not shocked, there were quite a few drunks there and she was one of them. The girl next to her jumped down her throat and was saying she can NOT do that! You go girl!

I'm just so impressed with the way he performed. He knows how to get the crowd going! I'm a regular at Wild Bill's since they have a lot of country stars there, but Dierks was the only one I've seen get the crowd going as loud as they did! You can tell he loves his fans." =============================================================================
"OMG!!! That was me that jumped down her throat," says LILWHITETANK54, Tracy, DBC rep in Alabama. "She was all trying to get (bass player) Robbie's attention. She didn't even look at Dierks the whole time she was hollering at Robbie & that's why he moved I bet. I have no idea who she was or where she came from, she just came out of nowhere. When she could not get Robbie to pay her attention, that is when she grabbed Dierks' leg. I was totally mortified because I didn't know her and I was so worried he would not come back over there to us. After that I told her she had to GO (and a few more choice words)! But I had a blast and did not let her ruin it for me! I stayed afterwards & met Dierks & got pics & autographs! If anyone is on here that met me or my sister, (Tracy & Tabatha from Alabama) ya'll email me! ====================================================================================
Debra is a proud DBC rep from Alabama. Here's her review: "Hey all-just made it back from Atlanta today--Dierks was really on FIRE! I arrived at Wild Bill's about an hour before the doors opened and got to visit with my old DRT friends... Granny Ann and Debra above Debra and Angie (choppergirl)
...and met some new ones as well! Always love to meet new fan club members-you girls are the nicest people to spend time with and enjoy the concert with-seriously! Debra and Tracy above

Of course us DB fans-Congress members as well-were first in line to go in and made it right to the front of the stage! That was so awesome to have Dierks performing so close to us all night! Rod was so sweet to come and play several times right in front of us also! The band sounded fantastic and I heard Dierks perform Life on the Run for the first time LIVE and of course it was great! Thanks too Dierks for throwing Sweet and Wild in there for us-really enjoy you singing that song! Dierks sang to us lucky girls on the front row many times and Keesha got the dance floor twirl during So So Long! He held my daughter Kristen's hand and sang to her and I do believe she's a DB fan for life now-lol! Really fantastic performance by Dierks and the band-fun to see Robbie singing now! One of my best Dierks shows ever! I didn't get to see Dierks at the bus-my daughter wanted to stay at Wild Bill's with some of her friends so I joined them. Much love to my fav DRT buddies Ronna,Chrissie,Rachel and her gang,Tammy,Angie,Lisa,Holly and Kelly-it made the show sooooo much better to have you guys there with me! So great to finally meet Granny Ann-what a wonderful, sweet lady! Trenda and 2 new Tracys I met also!!

BTW there were several times that Dierks was so close to me I could have touched his boots too-but I would never think about doing that! He's so sweet about getting that close to us and I certainly don't want him to stop! Thanks to all the FC who commented on my DBC shirt (complete with Dierks autograph!)I also got many comments and questions about my DBC shirt throughout the night by other people there-love promoting Dierks that way! Thanks for a fantastic night Dierks-you ROCK!" My pics were some of the best I have ever gotten-but it's because we were soooooo close: ================================================================================
As for me, I loved meeting all the new people from the fan club. I was so flattered that Tracy asked me to sign her Band of Sisters (and a few brothers) book that Crissy (TX) made last year! Ann (AL) gave out tons of DB Bracelets sent from Tara (CA) and as I was squeezing my way through the crowd to get back to the front of the stage, one girl saw my bracelet and wanted to know where I got it--so I gave her mine! Anything to get people to dierks.com to join the fan club and the DBC! I also handed out business cards to everyone who asked about the dbc shirts, the fan club or just curious about what DB Congress is all about. I remember this one lady who had been to Red Rocks in Denver, CO(I had my RR shirt on), and I gave her a card--hope she and the others find their way to this site!Me, Granny Ann, & Chrissie (GA) I did get a hand-hold from Dierks during Every Mile a Memory--that's always been a good luck song for me to get attention from D during the live show!

I love when Robbie sings "low, low, low, low"--just like his bass--during Life On The Run. Here's the first minute...
I was surprised but happy to hear them sing Sweet and Wild. And Rod, Tim and Steve showed they're as talented as ever!
Robbie Harrington:

Tim Sargent (I saw Tim squeezing through the crowd by the stage before the show and we exchanged hellos):

Rod Janzen:

Steve Misamore:

I guess my favorite part was after the concert, by the bus. Although they had a long drive back to Nashville, Dierks made time to sign and take photos with about 20 of us die-hard fans. He was so excited to be singing with Jessi Colter at 10 am the next morning, so I think he was rushing to get out of the cold and to save/protect his voice.

I had him sign my FTF CD, but didn't ask for a picture. Instead, I used my time to ask, "Please tell me you've seen the dbcongress.com website!?" "Yes, I have, it's great! Amazingly detailed! I have been meaning to blog about it. I told them (Echo) to get with ya'll to make sure you were ok with us (fan club) using the name "dbcongress." I told him yes they contacted us and we'd be honored! That's our Dierks! Always thinking of others! I hate that I can't remember word for word what he said, but I was just happy he has seen the site and likes it, and that I heard it from him in person! Made my whole night!

ESPN, NASCAR, SOUNDS OF DIERKS

If you're watching (or listening to) ESPN2 right now, you may notice that in between the rounds of the Nationwide Series race at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, you hear the sounds of Dierks Bentley! Every time they cut to commercial, they play a 3 second Feel That Fire, Sideways, Life On The Run, or believe it or not, Better Believer! All new songs from his Feel That Fire album, released 2/3/09.
Curiosity got the better of me, so I googled ESPN, Motorsports, and I searched for "dierks." Here (in part) is what I found:

Sights and sounds from Daytona
Saturday, February 7, 2009 | Print Entry

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A few sights and sounds from the Sprint Cup garage after a crazy night at Daytona International Speedway:

There's Tony Stewart talking to Hendrick Motorsports management about the engines they supply him at Stewart-Haas Racing, the ones that helped the two-time Cup champion to a third-place finish in the Budweiser Shootout.

There's fourth-place finisher Jeff Gordon giving advice to runner-up Jamie McMurray about the final two laps of the green-white-checkered finish, won by Kevin Harvick after a last-lap push from Denny Hamlin.

There's team owner Jack Roush walking past the NASCAR hauler, probably wondering whether there's something he could question officials about on the finish that saw McMurray's attempt to block Harvick fail.

There's country music star Dierks Bentley giving a postrace concert to the thin crowd that, for a cool winter night, forgot the tough economic times to watch the NASCAR season unfold.

And, ESPN.com blogger Marty Smith added a side note after his "A big Daytona Letdown?" blog: Song of the week: "Better Believer," Dierks Bentley. I feel like that a lot. Listen to it, you'll understand.

With all this dierksness in NASCAR, can't you just see Dierks singing, "...gonna get a little bit sideways" with NASCAR cars sliding sideways in the foreground, and Danica Patrick, with her long, dark hair (like all the leading ladies in DB's videos), "...I can see you came to rock in your blue jeans and white tank top...", (I know, I know, she's an IRL driver, but it could happen!). Sounds like a video in the making for Dierks' new single, Sideways, doesn't it?

DIERKS REVS IT UP IN DAYTONA

How does country music and NASCAR go together? That was just one of the questions at the Question and Answer session with Dierks Bentley on February 7, 2009 at the Daytona International Speedway. According to Dierks Bentley, they're a natural fit. A lot of NASCAR fans also love country music. And many of the singers and drivers are good ole boys who have formed friendships and an appreciation for each others' talents over the years.

I am so glad I spent the extra money to get the Dierks Bentley Special Offer package. Not only did we get to experience the ARCA race and the Budweiser Shootout race, but the special VIP passes gave us front row access to the Q&A, the pre-race concert and the post race concert.

My husband and I enjoyed the practice prior to the ARCA race and the people sitting behind us in the grand stands were wondering who was performing, so my husband told them "Dierks Bentley", and the girl said, "ooooo I really like him!" So he reached in his bag and gaver her one of my dbcongress business cards and started talking about the website--I was shocked he beat me to it!

I met up with Cora and Renee while my husband enjoyed the ARCA race. We were the only one's in the Q&A tent for the longest time--we were front and center. We were getting worried nobody would show up, but about 5 minutes before D was to be there, we looked back and the whole tent was full! Yeah! I had made up some business cards with the fan club and dbcongress.com website on them and placed them in the empty chairs (the new visitors to this site the next day was higher than any other day!). People were asking questions like "Are you going to sing?" - People--there were signs all over the place pre-race show/post-race concert!
One guy stood up and said he was the Bud distributor truck driver and wanted to know when Dierks was going to crack open that can of Bud Light at his feet by his stool--so he did.
The local DJ who was interviewing Dierks said, these ladies in the front row came all the way from Tampa--and he points to me and says, yeah I see Ronna and a lot of my fan club in the front row there. I asked the question, "Tell us about the Wubba Nub Girl song in the liner notes of your new album" He started to answer but raised the beer up to his mouth thinking it was the mic and started to talk. Everybody laughed. He explained something about the pacifier I think and that he wrote a song about it for his daughter. I asked him to sing a few lines, he said "No, that's a song only for Evie!" Oh well, I tried! The DJ had said to me earlier, I bet you don't care about the cars, you're just here for Dierks and I said "you're right!"
After the Q&A the ARCA race was just ending so we stood by the gate to go down on the track to the infield for the pre-race show.
We were dead center, but the stage was pretty high. They backed us up about 2 feel, telling us the "fire" would be coming out of these contraptions all across the stage--which it never did. But when I saw the DVR later, it was cool they way they had Dierks singing Feel That Fire and introducing the drivers with fire surrounding them. What they did not show on TV was him singing Free and Easy and Life On The Run. They sounded great as always. The only issue was the tall guy to my left with his elbow nearly on my head the whole time --he was video taping all 3 songs.

Then we went back into the stands to watch the Bud Shootout--what an exciting 75 laps! And Dierks was given the honor to recite those most famous words in Motorsports..."Gentlemen, Start...Your...Engines!" and was named the Grand Marshall, riding around the track in the pace car.

Then back across the infield we trekked to the post-race concert. I was worried because they opened the gate late, and when we got down to the stage area, there was a sea of people everywhere! Although I was happy for D to have such a huge turnout, I had no hope of getting up front. So, we walked around the back of the crowd and lo and behold there was a VIP area up front that our ticket gave us access to! So we squeezed up to the rail on Robbie's side. They played 13 songs--revving up the fans from the start with Life On The Run--I love that song! They had the whole crowd screaming and loving it!

I asked Jay for the set list afterward.

Even though it was in the 40's--good excuse to wear my DB hoodie--during the concerts it felt like 95--the whole FanZone was on fire! On our slow march to Parking Lot # 7 we were freezing but pumped up from a full day of great music, friends, and sport. It was a long day but so worth it to see Dierks three times in one day!
