"Say You Do" Single Review: Poised To Be Dierks Bentley's Next No. 1

Dierks Bentley’s versatility cannot be denied. He consistently and successfully releases songs that span a spectrum of emotions, from the humorous (“Drunk On A Plane,” “5150”), to the patriotic (“Home”) to straight up bluegrass (Up On The Ridge). But the one type of song he always does extremely well is the romantic-whether it is sexy, hopeful or yearning.

“Say You Do,” Dierks' third single (fourth if you count Bourbon In Kentucky) from this year’s CMA nominated Riser, combines all three. The song, written by Matt Ramsey, Shane McAnally and Trevor Rosen, is sensual, yet melancholy. “Say You Do” encompasses a yearning for someone so intensely that you are able to forego, as the opening line states, “the damage done” for another night together.

It’s having a desire so strong that one is willing to be with someone who broke their heart regardless of how it happens; whether it be through alcohol, leading him on or as he sings, begs even, to “let those words roll off your tongue even if you’re lying.”

The yearning one hears in Dierks’ voice is deep and real to the point of being painful. It’s 3:40 of pure emotional aching and desperation pleading for someone he still loves to voice the same “even if you don’t…..couldn't you say you do.”

“Well couldn't you
 Say you do
 Say you might
 For tonight
 Have a heart
 Bend the truth
 Even if you don't
 Couldn't you”

“Say You Do” seems poised to give Dierks his third consecutive number one.

DBC MEMBER OF THE WEEK: TARA (TJT0906 - NY)

First Name: Tara
dierks.com username: tjto9o6
Location: NY

What is your favorite Dierks Bentley song?
A tie between "Forget About You" and "Wish It Would Break".

What is your favorite Dierks Bentley album?
The self titled, Dierks Bentley.

What is your favorite Dierks Bentley music video?
The second version of "Sideways"….seems to show a “real” Dierks, in the jeep going out into the crowd/fans

What led you to be a fan?
"We do not have any country stations here in NY, my sister got me Sirius in June and I heard "Free and Easy" and loved it, and I had to find out about the guy who sang it. Then, I got tix to see Brad Paisley and lo and behold Dierks was opening. He blew me away! I love Brad, but Dierks…..wow!!! He had energy, enthusiasm and interacted with the crowd so well!! Next day, I immediately joined the fan club to really support him. Got tix to see them again at Madison Square Garden where I got a meet and greet. I was blown away by his kindness and the fact that he responded to a question, and talked with me and told me he liked my shirt. I was so shocked that I was speechless! It was the best night of my life!
"

Has Dierks or his music impacted your life in any way?
"He has inspired me to pick my mandolin back up and freshen up my skills - to remember that music always was a big part of my life, but I lost it somewhere along the way. His music also introduced me to bluegrass, which I really enjoy. His music just makes me so happy and gets me through if I have a bad day."

"Here in NY where Country music is not the most popular genre, I try to wear my Dierks t-shirts and ball caps almost every day and play him in the house when we have company!! I joined the DB Congress so I hope to display the bumper stickers and t-shirts and bracelets with pride. I also vote for Dierks thru all of the DBC links, buy magazines with him in them/on the cover and I send my friends and family links to his music!"
"Just meeting him at MSG and him telling me he liked my shirt…it made my year!! He was so personable and seemed genuinely interested in his fans. But I think I was so star struck that I do not remember what happened after that!! I hope I did not look stupid. Hope to get the chance to redeem myself at another M&G!"
